Respite care

Exceptional respite care at home for over 60 years

Respite care

Caring for a loved one can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also come with its challenges and demands, especially for those who have busy lives themselves.  At Consultus Care and Nursing, we recognise the importance of taking a break to recharge, knowing that your loved one is in safe hands receiving the care and support they need.

Our respite live-in care service provides short term expert care your loved one needs while offering you the peace of mind to rest and rejuvenate. Whether it is for a week or a few weeks, our compassionate carers will ensure your loved one continues to receive the high-quality care they deserve, all within the comfort of their own home.

What is respite care?

Respite care is a short-term care service designed to provide relief to family carers. It offers a much-needed break, allowing you to take time for yourself, whether for a holiday, recovery from illness, or simply to recharge. Our respite live-in care service means that your loved one will have a dedicated carer living with them in their own home, offering continuous care and support throughout your time away. This ensures that their routines and comfort are maintained, and you can step away reassured to get the time you need.

What does respite care at home cover?

Our respite live-in care service is as comprehensive as it is flexible, designed to fit seamlessly into your loved one’s existing routine. Our experienced carers provide a wide range of services to ensure your loved one’s comfort and well-being.

Assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and grooming, helping your loved one maintain their personal hygiene and dignity

If you receive care from a carer we introduce to you, whilst they are trained to support a person with their medications, we do not manage or oversee medication regimes.  With our fully managed service, carers are trained in medications management and there is oversight from your Care Consultant, which is beneficial particularly if you have a complex medications regime.

Our carers can prepare nutritious meals that cater to your loved one’s dietary preferences and requirements.

Providing friendly, supportive companionship to help your loved one stay engaged and emotionally supported during your time away.

Assistance with moving around the home, whether it is helping them in and out of bed, using mobility aids, or preventing falls.

Taking care of daily household tasks such as cleaning, laundry, and shopping, ensuring that the home remains a safe and comfortable environment.

If your loved one has a pet, our carers can also help with feeding, walking, and general pet care, ensuring all members of the household are well looked after.

Benefits of respite live-in care vs. residential care

When considering respite care, families often weigh the benefits of care at home versus receiving care in a residential setting. Respite live-in care offers several key advantages that make it a preferred choice for many.

Your loved one can remain in the comfort and familiarity of their own home, surrounded by their belongings and memories. This continuity of environment is especially beneficial for those who may find change unsettling or confusing, especially for only a short period of time.

Unlike residential settings where care is often shared among many residents, live-in care provides dedicated, one-to-one attention tailored to your loved one’s specific needs and preferences.

Our carers ensure that your loved one’s daily routines are maintained, providing a sense of stability and security. Any changes are introduced gradually and with sensitivity.

Respite live-in care is flexible, accommodating your needs whether you require support for just a few days or an extended period, or for a series of respites over a longer period.

Knowing that a professional carer is looking after your loved one allows you to take the time you need to do what you need to do, alleviating any worry about them having to leave their home to get the care they need.

Who can benefit from respite live-in care?

Respite live-in care is ideal for any family carer who needs a break from caring for a loved one. They can take a much-needed break to rest and recharge, or just catch up with their own life.

Whether you are looking after an elderly parent, a spouse, or a child with special needs, respite care provides the break you need to recharge.

For those who are responsible for providing care to a loved one over the longer term, taking a short break can be crucial for maintaining your own health and well-being.

If your loved one has recently been discharged from the hospital, respite care can provide the extra support needed during their recovery, or to support rehabilitation.

Unexpected events can disrupt your ability to provide care. Respite live-in care ensures continuity of care in such circumstances.

How we provide respite care at home

At Consultus Care and Nursing, we offer three distinct live-in care services for those requiring respite. We are committed to ensuring our clients receive the right level of care that meets their needs, whilst providing choice as to how their care arrangement is managed.

Introductory live-in care

With our introductory live-in care service, we recruit a self-employed carer who works in your home for you, independently of us.  In contrast to our managed live-in care service, with introductory care, we do not direct, supervise or manage the carers we introduce to you, and the carers are paid directly by you.

Managed live-in care

Our fully managed live-in care service is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in England, which results in regular inspections to ensure the care we provide is of the highest standard.  We fully manage the service, which means carers are supervised, managed and monitored by us when working in a client’s home.

Live-in nursing

Our live-in nurses are fully qualified registered nurses, with a minimum of three years post qualification experience. They are carefully selected for their specific skills and knowledge and have a broad range of experience including community and acute nursing, and palliative care.

Why choose Consultus Care and Nursing?

One of the longest-established and most trusted providers

Founded in 1962, we have always been innovators in live-in care and live-in nursing. With over 60 years’ experience, we are one of the country’s longest-established, most highly recommended and experienced providers.

Unrivalled choice and control over your care

We understand that every person’s needs are different and every family’s situation is unique. With our choice of fully managed live-in care and nursing, and our introductory service, we offer more flexibility and personalisation than any other provider.

Highly trained nurses and carers

We are nationally recognised for the quality of our nurses and carers. With market-leading training, delivered at our own, multi-award-winning training centre (a Skills for Care Centre of Excellence), they provide exemplary, compassionate care tailored to individual needs, offering total peace of mind for clients and their families.

Expert care and support, dedicated to you

Our Care Consultants oversee our nursing and managed care services supporting only a small number of families.  This means our service is truly personal, with unrivalled support and continuity of care. Reassurance that we are there when you need us most.

Family-founded, family-owned

We continue to be a family-owned and family-managed business. The largest wholly family-owned live-in care provider in the UK, we focus on what our clients and their families need from a high-quality care service, not on meeting investors’ expectations.
