How much does live-in care cost in the UK?

Live-in care costs explained

Live-in care is an excellent option for individuals needing around-the-clock care and support, but do not want to move into a residential care or nursing home.  Whether due to age and general frailty, health conditions or disability, live-in care provides a highly personalised solution that promotes independence, enriches life and delivers peace of mind for both clients and their families.

When considering which live-in care service is right for you, it is important to understand the differences in live-in care costs.

Managed live-in care costs

Our costs for live-in managed care are very competitive when compared to other live-in care providers.

Here is what is covered in a managed care service:

  • Carer recruitment, employment, supervision and management.

  • Comprehensive induction training and on-going professional development through our Skills for Care accredited Centre of Excellence.

  • Compliance with regulation through the Care Quality Commission (CQC), ensuring the highest standards of care.

  • Provision of a dedicated Care Consultant local to you who will closely monitor and manage the care delivered, whilst providing much support to the client, their families and our care teams.  Peace of mind for everyone.

  • 24/7 emergency support. Legal and financial protections, such as insurance, holiday pay, and pension contributions.

With a managed care service, you do not need to find another carer when your carer takes a break or has a holiday, we find another suitable carer for you.  The weekly fee covers all holiday cover and the carers travel cost to and from your home.  The only other live-in care cost you will incur is if you need support through the night, then additional ‘night calls’ are chargeable.

Introductory live-in care costs

Our introductory live-in care service will see us recruit and introduce to you a trained self-employed carer. The weekly fee you pay will be agreed between you and your carer.  However, following registration for this service, we can provide you a guide as to the weekly cost of care.

Whilst this service is more cost effective when compared to managed care, there are additional costs you will need to allow for:

  • A competitive weekly agency fee of £252 is chargeable by us and invoiced to you weekly.  This fee covers carer recruitment, carer selection, specialist and on-going training and emergency out-of-hours support.

  • You will be required to pay your carers travel costs from their home location to your home and back again.

  • We charge a one-off registration fee for this service of £250.

Our live-in care cost process

At Consultus Care and Nursing, our process for managed live-in care begins with a comprehensive assessment of your needs conducted by an expert Care Consultant, in collaboration with healthcare professionals if required. This assessment is either conducted in your home or in hospital, if you are awaiting discharge. Our assessment is holistic, taking into consideration not only your care needs, but your personal preferences and lifestyle. Based on this information, we provide a detailed quotation for a live-in care package that meets your individual requirements.

For introductory live-in care, your needs are discussed via a detailed telephone consultation with one of our Care Consultants. Similar questions are asked, concerning your preferences, lifestyle and individual care requirements to determine the level of care needed. You will then be matched with a Consultus trained, self-employed carer who will best meet your needs.  The weekly fee you pay will be agreed directly with the carer we introduce.

Comparing the cost of live-in care vs. a care home

Moving home at any time in life is stressful. As we get older it can be very disruptive, especially if we are living with a condition like dementia or Parkinson’s. With live-in care, your life doesn’t need to change. Sharing your home with a live-in carer means you can be cared for on a one-to-one basis in the place you feel most comfortable.

Receiving live-in care at home enables you to remain with your spouse and pets, continuing to spend your day as you wish – there are no set visiting hours, set menu or restricted activities imposed in a care home. You can continue to make your own choices whilst enjoying the company of a live-in carer who has been hand-picked for you. You can build meaningful relationships with your small rota of carers, who get to know you and how you wish to live your life.

Live-in care costs are broadly in line with a good quality care home, depending on the location of the care home in the UK. There are several factors that impact the cost of a care home, including where the home is located, the facilities available and the level of care required.

With our managed live-in care service, there is one weekly fee and our prices start from £1,603.  The costs of receiving care in a residential care or nursing home vary significantly, but typically range from £1,500 to £2,000 a week, sometimes more depending on the type of care home and where you are in the country.

For couples, live-in care is a particularly cost-effective option. If one live-in carer can provide the care needed to both individuals at the same address, then only one weekly fee is chargeable (with a nominal fee for the second individual).  If a couple receives care in a residential care home, two bedrooms will be needed, which means two weekly fees for care and accommodation.  Very few care homes have bedrooms to accommodate couples together.

Live-in care costs FAQs

The cost of live-in care will depend on the level of unique support needed. Someone needing light help around the house with daily tasks is likely to pay less than someone living with a complex condition, such as dementia. The type of service also plays a role in defining the cost. A fully managed, CQC-regulated service costs more than an introductory arrangement, but includes dedicated Care Consultant oversight, 24/7 emergency support, and all holiday cover. Whether overnight support is needed, and whether care is for one person or a couple, can also affect the overall weekly cost.

Yes. In some circumstances the NHS can fully fund live-in care through a scheme called NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC). CHC is available to adults whose care needs arise primarily from a health condition, and if eligible, it covers the full cost of care regardless of your financial situation. Importantly, CHC funding can be used for live-in care at home, not just for residential or nursing home placements, which many families are not aware of. Your local Integrated Care Board (ICB) carries out an assessment to determine eligibility, and our Care Advisors can help guide you through that process.

Attendance Allowance is a government benefit for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care or supervision due to illness or disability, and it can contribute toward the cost of live-in care. It is non-means-tested, which means savings and property do not affect eligibility. In 2026, it is payable at £72.65 per week (lower rate) or £108.55 per week (higher rate) depending on the level of need. While it does not cover the full cost of live-in care, it can be claimed alongside other funding such as local authority support. Our Care Advisors can help identify all the financial support you may be entitled to.

Not necessarily. Despite many thinking live-in care is the more expensive option, live-in care and care home costs are often broadly comparable. With Consultus Care, managed live in care starts from £1,603 per week, while UK care home fees typically range from £1,500 to £2,000 per week depending on location and level of care required. For couples, live-in care is often significantly cheaper, as only one weekly fee applies rather than two separate care home placements. Beyond cost, live-in care offers one-to-one support in the comfort and familiarity of your own home, which a care home simply cannot replicate.

The cost of live-in care for someone living with Alzheimer's is based on an individual assessment of their needs, as the level of support required varies greatly depending on the stage of the condition. At Consultus Care, all carers supporting individuals living with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia complete specialist training at our Skills for Care accredited Centre of Excellence, and are supported throughout the placement by a dedicated local Care Consultant. Because Alzheimer's is a progressive condition, care plans are reviewed regularly to ensure the support provided continues to meet your loved one's needs as things change. We would encourage you to call our Care Advisors on 01732 496715 for a personalised assessment and cost estimate.

There are a few key areas worth exploring when speaking with any live-in care provider. On regulation and safety, it is worth asking whether the service is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), what the most recent inspection found, and whether carers undergo enhanced DBS checks and employment reference checks. On costs, ask exactly what is included in the weekly fee, whether holiday cover and carer travel are included, and whether there are any charges for overnight support or bank holidays. On day-to-day support, it is also worth asking who your named point of contact will be and whether emergency support is available around the clock. At Consultus Care, we pride ourselves on our transparency, and would be happy to answer any of your questions.

"All my mother's carers have been fantastic: kind and extremely caring, conscientious and flexible. They and our care manager are very knowledgeable about her condition and circumstances, and always keep me informed.
