What is home care?

For most people, there truly is no place like home. Home care enables individuals to remain in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes while receiving the support they need with day-to-day tasks, personal care, or more complex health needs.

Whether for an elderly parent, a loved one with a long-term condition, or someone recovering from surgery, home care offers a practical, compassionate alternative to residential care settings. It’s tailored, flexible, and can be as simple as a daily visit or as comprehensive as 24 hour, live-in support.

At Consultus Care and Nursing, we’ve been providing compassionate, highly-skilled live-in care and live-in nursing for over 60 years, helping people across the country to live safely, independently and happily in their own homes. We believe life is better at home, granting more people the freedom to make their own choices and live life their way.

Why choose home care?

Homec are not only prioritises safety and support, but also independence, comfort and dignity. Unlike care homes, which can involve significant adjustment, home care allows individuals to continue enjoying their routines, familiar surroundings, pets, local community, and a greater sense of control over their day-to-day life.

For family members, it can bring peace of mind knowing their loved one is receiving one-to-one attention from a carefully matched carer in the place they know best.

What are the benefits of home care?

Home care offers a range of benefits that go beyond the basics of personal support and household tasks. Some of the most valued advantages include:

  • Personalised support: Care is centred entirely around the individual's needs, references and lifestyle

  • Consistency and familiarity: Remaining at home helps reduce confusion and anxiety, particularly for those living with dementia

  • Greater independence: Individuals are supported to live life their own way, remaining in control of their routines and decisions

  • Emotional wellbeing: Familiar surroundings, personal possessions, and connection to loved ones can make for a warmer environment

  • One-to-one attention: Home care allows for more focused, uninterrupted care that is unrivalled by residential homes

What home care services are available?

Home care comes in many forms, and can be tailored to meet both short and long term needs.

Live-in care

A professional carer moves into the home to provide round-the-clock support with personal care, companionship, meal preparation, medication management and more. It’s ideal for those with ongoing care needs who value privacy, independence and continuity.

Visiting care

Also known as domiciliary care or hourly care, this involves a carer visiting the home at set times throughout the day or week to assist with tasks such as personal care, dressing, mobility, or general household tasks.

Respite care

Short-term care at home provided in the home, often used to give family carers a much needed break. It may be planned or arranged quickly in emergencies, and can last from a few days to a few weeks.

Dementia care

Specialist support tailored to those living with dementia, focused on routine, reassurance and safety. Our carers receive award-winning training to respond with patience and understanding to common behaviours like confusion, agitation or wandering.

Elderly care

Elderly care at home designed to help older adults live well at home for longer. This may include assistance with mobility, household tasks, personal hygiene and emotional support. This helps to maintain comfort and independence.

Nursing care

Live-in nursing is a specialist form of care and support, where a registered nurse resides in your home to provide one-to-one medical care around-the-clock. Our live-in nursing service means you can avoid a prolonged stay in hospital or a disruptive move to a nursing home or hospice to get the specialist care you need.

What support can a home carer provide?

  • Sensitive personal care: Assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and continence care, helping your loved one maintain their personal hygiene and dignity.

  • Medications support: If you receive care from a carer we introduce to you, whilst they are trained to support a person with their medications, we do not manage or oversee medication regimes. With our fully managed service, carers are trained in medications management and there is oversight from your Care Consultant, which is beneficial particularly if you have a complex medications regime.

  • Meal planning and preparation: Our carers can prepare nutritious meals that cater to your loved one’s dietary preferences and requirements.

  • Specialist care Our live-in carers are trained to support complex conditions such as Parkinson’s, dementia, cancer, stroke recovery and more.

  • Companionship: Providing friendly, supportive companionship to help your loved one stay engaged and emotionally supported during your time away.

  • Mobility support: Assistance with moving around the home, whether it is helping them in and out of bed, support to use mobility aids, or to prevent falls.

  • Housekeeping: Taking care of daily household tasks such as cleaning, laundry, and shopping, ensuring that the home remains a safe and comfortable environment.

  • Pet care: If your loved one has a pet, our carers can also help with feeding, walking, and general pet care, ensuring all members of the household are well looked after.

How much does home care cost?

The cost of home care depends on the type and level of support required, as well as your location.

  • Visiting care typically costs between £25 - £38 per hour, depending on the region and complexity of care.

  • Live-in care at Consultus Care starts from £1,575 per week for our managed service, with pricing tailored after an assessment.

  • Respite care costs vary depending on the duration, urgency and nature of care. At Consultus Care, this starts from £1,036 per week.

It’s worth noting that home care can be a cost-effective alternative to residential care, particularly when factoring in the one-to-one support. You can learn more in our guide costs of live-in care.

Funding may be available through your local council or NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) for those with a primary health need. You can find more information in our guide on funding live-in care
