What is a spinal injury?

A spinal injury occurs when damage is done to the spinal cord, the central nervous system pathway responsible for sending messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Spinal injuries are often caused by trauma, such as falls, car accidents, or sports injuries, but they can also result from medical conditions like tumours, infections, or degenerative diseases. Depending on the location and severity of the injury, spinal injuries can lead to partial or complete loss of movement and sensation below the injury site, significantly impacting mobility, bodily functions, and overall independence.

The impact of a spinal injury can vary widely depending on its severity:

  • Tetraplegia (Quadriplegia) affects both the upper and lower parts of the body, including the arms, legs, and torso.

  • Paraplegia affects the lower half of the body, typically impairing movement and sensation in the legs and lower parts of the body.

Each type of spinal injury presents different care needs, but with the right support, individuals with spinal injuries can achieve a good quality of life. Our carers are trained to provide the physical and emotional assistance needed to meet the demands of living with a spinal injury.

Caring for different types of spinal injuries

Tetraplegia (Quadriplegia): This type of spinal injury can result in the loss of function in both the upper and lower parts of the body, meaning individuals may require full assistance with personal care, feeding, and mobility. Our carers provide 24/7 support, helping with all daily activities, including bathing, dressing, continence care, and transfers between bed and wheelchair. They also offer emotional support and companionship, which are crucial in helping your loved one adapt to the changes in their life.

Paraplegia: Individuals with paraplegia may retain the use of their arms but will require assistance with mobility and activities that involve their lower body. Our carers help with wheelchair use, personal care, and other daily tasks while promoting independence as much as possible. They can also assist with physiotherapy exercises to help maintain strength and flexibility in the upper body, as well as with activities that help foster a sense of normality and self-sufficiency.

Incomplete spinal injuries: In some cases, spinal injuries are classified as incomplete, meaning there is still some degree of movement or sensation below the injury site. For individuals with incomplete injuries, our carers focus on encouraging independence, assisting with rehabilitation, and providing support where needed, ensuring that your loved one can do as much as possible.

No matter the type or severity of the spinal injury, our carers offer both practical and emotional support tailored to your loved one’s specific needs.

Different stages of spinal injury recovery

Recovery from a spinal injury is often a long process, with varying levels of progress depending on the severity of the injury. At Consultus Care and Nursing, we provide support through every stage of your loved one’s recovery, ensuring they receive the right level of care at each phase.

Acute stage care: Immediately following a spinal injury, individuals may require intensive care, including full assistance with personal care, feeding, and mobility. Our carers work alongside healthcare professionals to provide this care while ensuring your loved one remains comfortable and dignified.

Rehabilitation stage care: As your loved one begins rehabilitation, the focus shifts to regaining independence and improving mobility. Our carers assist with physical therapy exercises, help manage pain, and encourage independence with tasks that promote recovery, such as personal care routines or learning to use assistive devices. Emotional support is also vital during this stage, as individuals often face significant psychological challenges.

Long-term care: Many individuals with spinal injuries will require on-going, long-term care to manage their symptoms and ensure a good quality of life. Our carers provide consistent, round-the-clock support, helping with mobility, personal care, medication management, and household tasks. They also ensure that your loved one stays engaged in meaningful activities and social interactions that contribute to their emotional well-being.

How does spinal injury care support your loved one?

Our live-in spinal injury care service is designed to meet the specific needs of individuals living with spinal injuries, allowing them to remain in the comfort of their own home while receiving expert care. Our carers work closely with you, your family, and healthcare professionals to create a personalised care plan that evolves as your loved one’s needs change. Our spinal injury care typically includes:

  • Personal care: Assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, and continence care, helping your loved one maintain their personal hygiene and dignity.

  • Mobility support: Our carers help with wheelchair transfers, repositioning in bed, and using assistive devices, ensuring that your loved one remains as independent as possible.

  • Rehabilitation support: We work alongside physiotherapists and other healthcare professionals to assist with exercises that promote strength, flexibility, mobility and overall rehabilitation.

  • Medication management:  Our carers are trained in medications management.  They ensure medications are taken on time, prescriptions are available when needed and medication regimes are closely monitored and managed, with oversight from a Care Consultant local to you.

  • Nutritional support: Our carers prepare nutritious meals that meet your loved one’s dietary needs and preferences, supporting their overall health and recovery.

  • Emotional support: Living with a spinal injury can be emotionally upsetting. Our carers provide companionship, encouragement, and a listening ear to help manage feelings of frustration, anxiety, or depression.

Benefits of live-in spinal injury care vs. residential care

When choosing the best care option for your loved one, live-in care and live-in care for couples offers several advantages over moving into a residential or nursing home:

  • Familiar environment: Remaining in the comfort of their own home can have a positive impact on your loved one’s emotional well-being and sense of security. Being surrounded by familiar belongings and a familiar routine can help reduce anxiety and stress.

  • Personalised care: In a care home, care is typically shared amongst multiple residents. With live-in care, your loved one receives one-to-one attention from a carer who gets to know them personally, providing care that is tailored to their unique needs and preferences.

  • Independence: Live-in care allows your loved one to maintain a greater degree of independence. Our carers encourage your loved one to participate in their daily routine as much as possible, fostering a sense of control and self-sufficiency.

  • Family involvement: Live-in care allows family members to remain closely involved in their loved one’s care, offering peace of mind and the ability to play an active role in their life.

How we provide spinal injury care at home

At Consultus Care and Nursing, we offer two distinct live-in care services for those living with a spinal injury. We are committed to ensuring our clients receive the right level of care that meets their needs, whilst providing choice as to how their care arrangement is managed.

  • Managed Live-in Care: Our fully managed live-in care service is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in England, which results in regular inspections to ensure the care we provide is of the highest standard.  We fully manage the service, which means carers are supervised, managed and monitored by us when working in a client’s home.  An expert Care Consultant local to you will plan the care you receive, regularly reviewing the service to ensure it continues to meet evolving needs.  Our in-house team is there 24 hours a day to provide support to clients and carers.  Peace of mind, just when you need it most.

  • Live-In Nursing: Our live-in nurses are fully qualified registered nurses, with a minimum of three years post qualification experience. They are carefully selected for their specific skills and knowledge and have a broad range of experience including community and acute nursing, and palliative care. A live-in nurse can provide the next level of care needed for individuals with more complex healthcare needs associated with a spinal injury. Our service means you can avoid a prolonged stay in hospital or a disruptive move into a nursing home to get the specialist care required. As with our managed live-in care service, our nursing service is regulated by the CQC, and we provide 24/7 support to our clients, their families and our nurses so everyone has the support they need.

What our clients say...

''

The family has just started with Consultus Care last month and our experience to date has been excellent. Our Regional Care Manager, Samantha, is kind, professional and extremely well-organised. She matched our Mother very well with Mary Anne, our first live-in carer. Mary Anne has been absolutely lovely too, so dedicated to looking after our Mother's wellbeing, and very friendly and positive. I particularly like the daily reports we receive, they are very reassuring, as they run through everything to do with our Mother's personal care, meals, activities etc.

Lynda, February 2024

I wanted to take this opportunity to particularly thank you for all that you have done to help with my father's care. From the day we became clients, we have received nothing but the most professional, efficient and understanding service from yourself and it could not have been a better experience from our part. Unfailingly, you have provided us with the best carers we could possibly have imagined, and you could even help us out with sudden and unexpected requests with calm and rapid results.

Kate, January 2024

We used Consultus to provide live-in carers for five and a half years. I can’t recommend Consultus enough. They are far better than any other agencies I’ve experienced. They are fair, excellent at administration and the customer service was excellent. I would definitely use Consultus again. Thank you.
