What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that affects the central nervous system, disrupting the flow of information between the brain and the rest of the body. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibres, leading to inflammation and damage. MS symptoms can vary widely but often include fatigue, difficulty with balance and coordination, muscle weakness, and problems with vision or sensation. These symptoms may come and go, or gradually worsen over time. While there is no cure for MS, there are treatments and support available to help manage the condition and maintain a good quality of life.
Types of MS
Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS): This is the most common form of MS, affecting roughly 75% of all those diagnosed. It’s characterised by periods of new or increasing symptoms (relapses) followed by partial or complete recovery (remissions). During remissions, the disease doesn’t progress, but damage from relapses may accumulate over time.
Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS): SPMS often follows RRMS. Over time, symptoms worsen steadily without clear periods of remission. Some people with RRMS eventually transition to SPMS as the disease progresses.
Primary Progressive MS (PPMS): In PPMS, symptoms gradually worsen from the onset without distinct relapses or remissions. It’s less common and tends to affect mobility more significantly. Around 10% of those with MS are affected by PPMS.
Progressive-Relapsing MS (PRMS): This is a rare form of MS, where there is a steady progression of symptoms from the beginning with occasional relapses or exacerbations along the way, but no full recovery.

Benefits of MS Live-in Care
Choosing the right care for your loved one with Multiple Sclerosis is a crucial decision. While nursing home care is an option, live-in care offers distinct advantages that can greatly enhance your loved one’s quality of life and offer peace of mind for your family.
Familiar environment: Staying at home allows your loved one to remain in a familiar and comfortable space, which can reduce stress and worry, particularly during flare-ups.
Personalised one-to-one support: Unlike in a care or nursing home, where care is shared among residents, live-in care provides dedicated, personalised attention tailored specifically to your loved one’s needs.
Continuity of care: Consistency is important for managing MS. Live-in care ensures that your loved one’s routines are maintained, with any changes introduced gradually to minimise disruption to daily life.
Family involvement: Live-in care allows family members to stay closely involved in their loved one’s care, ensuring the care plan aligns with your family’s preferences and values.
Enhanced quality of life: With live-in care, your loved one can enjoy the privacy and independence of home while receiving the professional care they need to manage their condition.
