Mental Health Live-in Care That Puts People First

Consultus Care and Nursing provides personalised live-in care for people whose main needs relate to ageing, dementia, frailty, physical health or nursing care. Where a stable mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety, is a secondary part of those wider care needs, our mental health live-in care may also provide valuable day-to-day support at home.

We are not a specialist mental health provider and cannot support people whose primary need is an acute, complex or unstable mental health condition. In those circumstances, we will explain this clearly and signpost the person or their family towards appropriate specialist mental health services. Every enquiry is considered individually following an assessment of needs and risks.

What is mental health live-in care

Mental health care at home can form part of a wider live-in care package when a person's main needs relate to dementia, ageing, frailty, physical health or nursing care. A carefully matched carer lives in the person's home and provides agreed support during their working hours, while the client remains in familiar surroundings.

This is non-specialist, day-to-day care rather than psychiatric treatment or crisis support. Our carers can work alongside a person's GP, community mental health team or other healthcare professionals, within the boundaries of the agreed care plan.

Mental health needs we may support at home

We may be able to support someone living with depression or anxiety when the condition is stable, appropriately managed and secondary to their main care needs. Support may include companionship, encouragement with routines, meal preparation, personal care and agreed medication prompts, depending on the service and care plan.

Conditions such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder usually require specialist mental health assessment and support when they are the person's primary or complex need. If any mental health condition is acute, unstable or presents a significant risk to the person or others, Consultus would not be the appropriate provider and specialist services should be contacted.

What can mental health care at home include?

Where it is suitable following assessment, we can include in-home care for mental health within a broader personalised care package. The precise support depends on the person's overall needs, the chosen Consultus service and the agreed care plan. It may include:

  • Personal care

A carer may help with agreed personal care tasks, including washing, dressing and grooming, while supporting the person to retain as much independence and choice as possible.

  • Daily routine

A consistent daily routine can support wellbeing. Carers may assist with meal preparation, nutrition, activities, appointments and gentle encouragement throughout the day.

  • Everyday emotional wellbeing support

Support may include companionship, reassurance, agreed medication prompts and accompaniment to appointments. It does not include psychiatric treatment, mental health crisis management or continuous clinical supervision. Anyone experiencing an acute mental health crisis should contact the appropriate NHS or emergency service.

Live-in care and mental health support

Consultus provides live-in care and live-in nursing, rather than a visiting care service. Mental health-related support can only be included where it sits safely within an appropriate wider care or nursing package.

Live-in mental health support at home

Our mental health support at home is based on an agreed care plan and the carer's working hours and responsibilities. Although a carer lives in the property, this is not a 24/7 mental health monitoring or crisis service. The suitability of live-in care will depend on the person's overall needs, risks and any involvement from specialist professionals.

When specialist mental health care is needed

If a person's primary need is a complex, acute or unstable mental health condition, they are likely to need a specialist mental health provider rather than standard live-in care. A GP, NHS community mental health team or other qualified mental health professional can advise on the most appropriate support. In an immediate emergency or where there is a risk of harm, call 999.

If mental health is a secondary part of wider care needs, our live-in mental health care may be appropriate following assessment. Call 01732 496715 or request a callback and we will discuss the person's needs honestly, including whether Consultus is the right provider.

The benefits of live-in care where mental health is a secondary need

When a person is suitable for live-in care, remaining at home can provide continuity, familiarity and practical support. These benefits may also support emotional wellbeing where depression, anxiety or another stable mental health condition forms part of the person's overall care needs.

  • A familiar environment

Remaining at home allows a person to stay close to familiar surroundings, possessions, family, friends and their community. This continuity can be reassuring, particularly for someone living with dementia, anxiety or low mood.

  • Consistent care

Live in care provides one-to-one support from a carefully matched carer within the agreed care plan. Greater continuity can help the carer understand the person's routines, preferences and changes in wellbeing.

Depending on the service selected and the person's needs, carers may work in rotation. We will explain the proposed arrangement, working hours and level of support before care begins.

  • A stable routine

A regular routine can support confidence and wellbeing. For example, someone experiencing low mood alongside dementia or physical care needs may benefit from encouragement with meals, activities, personal care and social contact.

  • Adaptable support

Care can be reviewed as needs change, but any change must remain within the scope of the chosen service and the carer's skills. If mental health needs become acute, unstable or the person's primary care need, specialist reassessment and support may be required.

We will work with the client, family and relevant professionals to decide whether the current package remains safe and suitable.

To discuss whether Consultus could provide an appropriate live-in care package, call 01732 496715 or request a callback. We will assess the person's complete needs before confirming whether we can safely help.

Why choose Consultus for live-in care with secondary mental health needs?

Consultus Care and Nursing has provided live-in care and nursing to families since 1962. Our experience lies in supporting people at home with needs relating to ageing, dementia, frailty, physical health and nursing care, including clients who also live with stable mental health conditions.

We are a family-owned provider and take care to be clear about what we can and cannot safely support. Where a package is suitable, we focus on personalised care, continuity and a thoughtful match between the client and carer.

  • Professionally trained carers

Our employed carers complete comprehensive training through our award-winning, Skills for Care-accredited training centre. Training supports them to recognise changes in wellbeing, communicate sensitively and provide safe care within their role. It does not make them specialist mental health practitioners.

We also provide live-in nursing for people with eligible nursing needs. A registered nurse does not replace specialist psychiatric services, and suitability is always determined through assessment.

  • Carer matching

A strong relationship between carer and client is important in all care, including mental health homecare that forms part of a wider package. We consider experience, skills, personality, communication style and the person's preferences when matching a carer.

Frequently asked questions about mental health live-in care

We may support stable depression, anxiety or other mental health needs when they are secondary to the person's main care needs and can be safely managed within a live-in care or nursing package. Each enquiry is assessed individually; a diagnosis alone does not determine suitability.

We are not a specialist mental health provider. If bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, a personality disorder, PTSD, OCD or another mental health condition is the primary, acute or complex need, specialist mental health support is likely to be more appropriate. We will not accept a package where we cannot meet the person's needs safely.

Live-in care helps a suitable person remain at home with practical and personal support. It is not equivalent to a specialist mental health facility and does not provide psychiatric treatment, secure care, crisis intervention or continuous clinical monitoring. Specialist residential or community mental health services may be necessary where those forms of support are required.

We begin with an assessment of the person's complete needs, preferences, routines, risks and current professional support. If Consultus can safely help, we match carers according to relevant experience, skills, personality and communication style. We also keep suitability under review as needs change.

Call 01732 496715 or request a callback. We will ask about the person's primary care needs, mental and physical health, risks, current treatment and professional involvement. We will then explain whether a Consultus live-in care or nursing service may be suitable, or whether specialist mental health support should be sought instead.
