What is dementia care?
Living with dementia, or looking after a loved one living with dementia, can bring with it a host of emotions, questions, and concerns. Knowing that support is available can offer some reassurance during what can feel like an uncertain time.
At Consultus Care and Nursing, we’ve been caring for and supporting people to live well at home for over 60 years. We believe life is better at home, and our personalised, one-to-one live-in care services allow people to remain in the place they feel most comfortable, surrounded by the familiarity and routine that matter most - something especially valuable for those living with dementia.
What is dementia?
Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a group of progressive conditions that affect the brain. The most common type is Azheimer’s disease, but there are several others including vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia and frontotemporal dementia. Symptoms can include memory loss, confusion, difficulty with communication, and changes in behaviour and personality.
As dementia affects everyone differently, the progression of symptoms and care needs will vary from person to person. While there is currently no cure, the right support can make a meaningful difference to quality of life.
Understanding dementia care
Dementia care is specialised support tailored to meet the changing needs of someone living with dementia. It involves helping individuals remain safe, comfortable, and as independent as possible - while also preserving their dignity and sense of identity.
The nature of this care and its focus will change as dementia progresses. In the early stages, support might involve gentle reminders, help with household tasks, and companionship. As time goes on, more hands-on care may be needed - such as assistance with personal care, mobility support, and managing medication.

Who is dementia care for?
Dementia care is for anyone living with any form of dementia - regardless of the stage of the condition. It’s also a form of support for families and loved ones, who may be providing care themselves and looking for guidance, reassurance, or a more sustainable solution to care.
Whether someone has just received a diagnosis and needs a little extra help at home, or they are in the later stages and require round-the-clock assistance, dementia care can be adapted to suit individual needs. It can be delivered at home, in a care home, or through a combination of settings depending on preferences and circumstances.

What does our dementia care include?
Dementia care will vary depending on the severity of the condition and the setting it’s provided in, but typically includes:
Assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and continence care, helping your loved one maintain their personal hygiene and dignity
If you receive care from a carer we introduce to you, whilst they are trained to support a person with their medications, we do not manage or oversee medication regimes. With our fully managed service, carers are trained in medications management and there is oversight from your Care Consultant, which is beneficial particularly if you have a complex medications regime.
Our carers can prepare nutritious meals that cater to your loved one’s dietary preferences and requirements.
Providing friendly, supportive companionship to help your loved one stay engaged and emotionally supported during your time away.
Assistance with moving around the home, whether it is helping them in and out of bed, support to use mobility aids, or to prevent falls.
Taking care of daily household tasks such as cleaning, laundry, and shopping, ensuring that the home remains a safe and comfortable environment.
If your loved one has a pet, our carers can also help with feeding, walking, and general pet care, ensuring all members of the household are well looked after.
Organising cognitive and physical activities to help maintain mental stimulation.
What are the benefits of dementia care at home?
Home is often the place where people feel most comfortable and secure. For someone living with dementia, familiar surroundings can play a vital role in reducing confusion, anxiety, and disorientation.
Choosing in-home dementia care brings a number of benefits:
Less disruption and fewer changes help to maintain a sense of safety and normality.
A consistent carer can help build trust and a more meaningful relationship.
Care plans can be tailored and adapted as needs change over time
Family members can stay closely connected and involved in the care of their loved one
One-to-one care ensures needs are met with focus and empathy, where carers are stretched across numerous residents in a care home setting.
Care is delivered in a way that respects the individual’s autonomy and wishes.
Live-in care for couples enables life partners to remain together, receiving care in a familiar environment. With residential care, couples are often split up, with few providers offering shared accommodation
How much does dementia care cost?
The cost of dementia care can vary depending on the type of care, how often it’s needed, and where it’s delivered. For example:
Live-in dementia care at home with Consultus Care starts from £1,575 per week for our managed service. This includes professional one-to-one support from the comfort of your own home.
Visiting care (also known as domiciliary care) can cost between £25 - £38 per hour, depending on the location and the complexity of care.
Residential or nursing homes can start from £1,267 per week, though this can be higher for specialist dementia care.
It’s important to remember that while in-home care might seem more costly initially, the level of personalisation and one-to-one support it offers is often greater than in a care home setting, leading to better health outcomes and quality of life.
