live-in care

It's heartbreaking to watch a loved one's dementia progress, especially if they've recently been assessed as needing specialist dementia care. Fortunately, EMI nursing can help your loved one and family navigate the challenges of advanced dementia, Alzheimer's disease, or complex mental health challenges.

However, you might wonder what is EMI nursing and have many questions about what it stands for, what it involves, and who it's for. You may even wonder whether any alternatives are available to provide your loved one with the support they need.

We aim to provide all the answers to your questions below to help you learn more about EMI nursing and determine if it's the right option for your family member.

What does EMI mean in care?

The first question you might have is what does EMI mean? EMI stands for Elderly Mentally Infirm (EMI), relating to people living with advanced dementia, significant cognitive decline, or complex mental health conditions.

While it might provide an answer to what does EMI stand for in care, it's important to note that the term EMI is considered outdated in most clinical settings. Instead, more modern terms are often used, such as 'advanced dementia care' or 'specialist dementia care unit.' However, EMI is widely used in care home descriptions across the UK, where many families first encounter the term.

What is EMI nursing care?

Many people often ask what is EMI nursing when they hear the term for the first time.

EMI nursing care takes place in an EMI nursing home or an EMI nursing unit, specialist care settings for people with advanced dementia and complex medical needs requiring nursing care. Registered nurses are typically on-site 24 hours a day, supporting residents with advanced healthcare needs, providing nursing interventions, and managing medications.

EMI nursing care differs from EMI residential care, as the latter provides personal care and dementia support without registered nurses on-site.

It may also provide peace of mind to know that the staff at EMI nursing settings are specifically trained in advanced dementia care, behaviour management, and complex mental health support.

In addition to providing around-the-clock clinical oversight, EMI nursing care is a suitable option for people whose dementia is accompanied by unstable or complex physical conditions requiring regular nursing intervention.

What is an EMI unit meaning and what does it provide?

To put it simply, an EMI unit is a specialist, self-contained section within a care home or nursing home. It's specifically designed and staffed for residents with advanced dementia or significant cognitive decline.

EMI units reassure families that their loved ones are safe and comfortable, as they typically include locked doors, calming spaces, safe garden areas, and dementia-friendly layouts, such as clear signage and colour coding.

Residents in EMI units also receive around-the-clock specialist care, individualised care plans, and structured daily routines to improve their quality of life. Also, the units usually have higher staff-to-resident ratios to ensure 24-hour clinical oversight and support. Residents can also enjoy various sensory activities each day, including music therapy, sensory gardens, and reminiscence sessions.

EMI nursing units specifically have a registered nurse on-site who is available 24 hours a day, which is in addition to the specialist dementia care team.

It is, however, important to note that some care homes may provide EMI beds instead of a dedicated EMI unit. For this reason, it is recommended to confirm the level of care provided to patients with dementia or complex mental health challenges during a care home visit.

Who is EMI nursing care for?

EMI nursing care is specially designed for older adults with advanced cognitive decline or complex mental health conditions and significant medical needs. It's typically available for people with the following common diagnoses:

  • Alzheimer's disease

  • Vascular dementia

  • Lewy body dementia

  • Mixed dementia

  • Parkinson's disease with dementia

People who move into EMI nursing care typically have common symptoms and behaviours, such as:

  • Acute memory loss

  • Persistent confusion and disorientation

  • Mood swings and agitation

  • Behaviours that challenge, such as aggression or wandering

  • Difficulty with all daily tasks

  • Co-existing physical health conditions

EMI nursing care differs greatly from general dementia care, as it's specifically available for those at the more complex end of the care spectrum, requiring clinically necessary nursing input.

How does EMI nursing care differ from standard nursing care?

While a standard nursing home is right for some families, it may not be a suitable option for someone with advanced dementia. Although EMI nursing care and standard nursing care both have registered nurses on site 24 hours a day, there are key differences you should consider.

EMI nursing exclusively focuses on advanced dementia and complex mental health needs. In contrast, standard nursing care covers a broad range of medical conditions, including Parkinson's disease, post-stroke recovery, wound care, and diabetes management.

Also, EMI nursing settings are carefully designed with dementia in mind, featuring secure layouts, familiar cues, and sensory spaces. While standard nursing homes offer a clinical design, they don't usually have specialist dementia features to support those with advanced dementia.

What's more, EMI nursing staff typically receive specific dementia and mental health training, while general nursing staff may not have the same level of specialist dementia experience.

How does EMI nursing care compare to EMI residential care?

It's worth knowing your options before arranging specialist dementia care for your loved one. For some families, specialist live-in care offers a dependable alternative to an EMI nursing unit. The home-based service allows a person to remain in the familiarity of their home while receiving one-to-one specialist support.

Once you've arranged a live-in dementia care service, a specialist carer moves into your loved one's home and lives with them full-time to provide around-the-clock support. We even create a personalised care plan to match your family member's specific dementia needs.

A live-in nursing care service is also available for those who have complex medical needs that accompany dementia. This service reassures your family that a live-in registered nurse or specialist care team will provide your loved one with nursing-level support at home.

However, live-in care isn't always the most appropriate option for people with very complex behaviours, significant safety risks, or who need intensive clinical intervention. If this is the case, an EMI nursing unit may be a safer environment for the person you love.
