How To Become a Live-in Carer

Thinking about a career as a live-in carer? Read our helpful guide below to find out what the role involves, what we look for in the people we recruit, how the application process works, and what you can expect once you join Consultus Care.

Consultus Carers going through training

Becoming a live-in carer is one of the most rewarding career choices a person can make. You are not visiting someone for half an hour; you are living alongside them, getting to know them properly, and making a genuine difference to their daily life. The work is meaningful in a way that is hard to replicate in most other professions.

It is also a career with real variety, a good level of financial reward, and a lifestyle that suits people who value independence. If you are considering taking the step, this guide covers everything you need to know.

What does a live-in carer actually do?

A live-in carer moves into a client's home and provides one-to-one support throughout the day. Depending on the client's needs, this can range from help with personal care, meal preparation and medication, through to specialist support for conditions like dementia, Parkinson's disease or stroke recovery.

No two placements are the same. One client may need a great deal of hands-on physical support; another may be largely independent but benefit enormously from the companionship and reassurance of having someone they trust nearby. A live-in carer adapts to each individual, building a routine that fits their life rather than one imposed from outside.

Most carers work around eight to ten hours per day, spread across the client's waking hours. This is not a nine-to-five role: mornings, evenings and occasional overnight checks are part of the picture. In return, carers receive accommodation in the client's home, which is provided as part of the employment package, and have genuine time off between placements to rest and recharge.

Do you need experience to become a live-in carer?

Professional care experience is valuable and will strengthen your application, but it is not always essential. Relevant backgrounds include working as a care assistant, healthcare assistant, domiciliary carer or in another health or social care setting. Experience of caring for a family member or close friend can also count, particularly if it involved personal care or supporting someone with a specific condition.

What matters most to us at Consultus Care is the kind of person you are. We can teach care skills and provide specialist training, but we cannot teach someone to be compassionate, patient and genuinely interested in the wellbeing of the people they support. Those qualities need to already be there.

If you are new to professional care, the most important thing is to be honest about your experience and to demonstrate a real understanding of what the role involves. A thoughtful, self-aware application will always stand out.

What qualities and skills do we look for?

The practical requirements for a live-in carer role with Consultus Care include a high standard of written and spoken English, the right to work in the UK, and the ability to pass police checks and provide good professional and personal references. Good cooking skills and the confidence to manage a household are also important, as these are a natural part of daily life with a client.

Beyond the practical, we look for people who are kind, patient and resilient. Live-in care can be demanding, and there will be days that test your resolve. The carers who thrive are those who can stay calm under pressure, adapt to changing circumstances and bring warmth to the role consistently, not just on the easy days.

We also look for good observational skills and the ability to communicate clearly, both with clients and with their wider care team. Noticing that something has changed with a client's condition, and knowing how to respond and report it effectively, is a skill that protects people. Alongside this, a respect for each person's privacy, dignity and the right to make their own choices is important.

Physical fitness matters too, particularly for tasks that require manual handling, supporting mobility, and carrying out household tasks. We also look for carers that are comfortable with technology, as car plans and communications are Consultus Care are managed through our digital systems.

How does the application process work?

The application process at Consultus Care is thorough, because the people we place are trusted to work in someone's home and provide their care. We take that responsibility seriously, and we want every carer we recruit to feel properly prepared before they start.

The process begins with an application, which gives us an initial picture of your background, experience and motivation. If your application is a good fit, we will invite you for an interview with one of our recruitment team. This is a two-way conversation; we want to understand what you are looking for from a career in care, and we want to give you a clear picture of what working with Consultus Care involves.

Successful candidates then attend our induction training at our training centre of excellence. This is mandatory for all new carers, regardless of prior experience. References are taken up and DBS checks completed as standard before any placement begins.

What does the training involve?

Our induction training is designed to give every carer the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to provide outstanding one-to-one care from the very first day of their placement. It covers a wide range of topics, including personal care, medication administration, safe moving and handling, safeguarding, dementia awareness, end-of-life care, nutrition and hydration, continence management, common health conditions, and first aid.

Alongside the clinical and practical content, training covers the values and approach that define the Consultus Care way of working. Person-centred care, respecting independence, maintaining dignity, and communicating effectively with clients, families and colleagues. You will also be introduced to our systems and processes, and to the support structure that sits around you throughout your placements.

Our carer training is endoresed by Skills for Care, the leading workforce development body for adult social care in England. This means every course we deliver meets strict industry standards, and the training you receive is nationally recognised. All carers also have the opportunity to work towards a Diploma in Health and Social Care at Levels 2 and 3 as their career progresses.

What support will you receive as a Consultus carer?

One of the most common concerns people have about live-in care is the feeling of isolation that comes from working alone. Placements can be in unfamiliar parts of the country, away from family and friends, and the responsibility of caring for someone around the clock can feel daunting, particularly in the early days.

At Consultus Care, we work hard to make sure our carers never feel on their own. Every carer has a dedicated Care Consultant who is in regularly contact throughout a placement, whether by phone, email, or in person. Our support team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week so if something happens at two in the morning, there is always someone on the other end of the phone.

We also run regular drop-in sessions and connect carers with each other, so that you can share experiences, ask questions and feel part of a wider community of people doing the same work. This peer support is important, and we invest in making it as easy to access as possible.

For carers who join our managed service, we handle holiday pay, PAYE, and National Insurance contributions, and provide access to a workplace pension. This takes the administrative burden off your shoulders and means your pay and employment rights are properly protected from day one.

What does the working pattern look like?

Live-in carers at Consultus Care typically work on a rotational basis, alternating periods on placement with time off. Common rotations include two week on and one week off, though this varies depending on the needs of the client and your own preferences. During your time off, a relief carer steps in to maintain continuity of care.

This working pattern is one of the things that makes live-in care genuinely different from most care roles. The extended breaks between placements give you proper time to rest, pursue your own interests, spend time with family, or travel. Many of our carers find that the rotation model suits their lifestyle very well, particularly those who want to save money efficiently or who have commitments at home that want to honour during their time off.

The financial package reflects the commitment involved. Carers working with Consultus Care can expect to earn between £735 and £1000 per week, depending on the role and the specific needs of the client. Because accommodation and, in many cases, food are provided during placements, the real value of that package goes further than the headline figure suggests.

Is live-in care the right career for you?

Live-in care is not the right fit for everyone, and it is wort being honest with yourself before applying. The role required you to be away from home for extended periods, to live and work in someone else's space, and to provide support that is sometimes physically and emotionally demanding. It calls for flexibility, resilience, and a genuine ability to put someone else's needs at the centre of everything you do.

For the right person though, it is an extraordinary career. The relationships you build with clients are unlike anything you will find in a care home or a visiting care role. You are part of their daily life in a real and meaningful way, and the trust that develops between a life-in carer and their client is something both parties value deeply.

If you are the kind of person who is driven by making a difference, who enjoys building genuine relationships, who takes pride in doing a job well and who wants a career with variety, purpose and real financial reward, live-in care with Consultus care is worth considering.
