As a family carer, your loved one’s health is likely your priority. However, you may find you suddenly have no choice but to step back from the role to care for your own health and wellbeing.

Whether you’re experiencing carer burnout or have developed an unexpected illness, you or your family must organise immediate support for your loved one. This provides peace of mind that your loved one is in safe hands, allowing you to focus on rest and recovery.

Read on for informative advice on how to get emergency respite care quickly in the UK.

What Is Emergency Respite Care?

Many families seek emergency respite care for short-term support when a family carer is unable to care for a loved one. Unlike traditional respite care that’s planned weeks or months in advance, emergency respite care quickly provides cover due to an unforeseen crisis. This could be a medical emergency, a mental health issue, a sudden illness, or a family crisis.

Respite care in an emergency ensures a fully trained carer is on hand to meet your loved one’s round-the-clock needs, giving you time to focus on your health, wellbeing, or family.

When Might You Need Urgent Respite Care?

Every carer deserves to take a step back from their role when they’re struggling with their physical or mental health, have a medical emergency, or are dealing with a family crisis.

Carers often need urgent respite care in the UK for many reasons, such as:

  • Carer burnout

  • A sudden illness (such as the flu, an infection, or COVID-19)

  • A medical emergency

  • Hospital discharge

  • A family emergency/crisis

Also, a family may decide last minute respite care is necessary if a loved one’s health condition suddenly deteriorates. It could serve as a short-term solution while a family establishes a long-term care plan.

  • Step 3: Choose Your Required Service

We understand different families have varying needs, which is why we provide live-in care and live-in nursing services.

NHS and Local Authority Support

You can access various funding options for emergency care support in the UK, as well as traditional respite care services. To take some of the financial pressure off your shoulders, we recommend contacting your local authority or the NHS.

Your Local Authority

If you’re worried about your loved one being left alone during a carer’s sudden absence, don’t hesitate to call your local authority to request an emergency assessment. Detail your current situation to convey that the family is experiencing a carer crisis and requires urgent respite care. As a result, your local council may provide emergency funding or an immediate placement.

The NHS

For some people, they already know or will find out that they don’t qualify for respite care funding from the local authority. If this applies to you, call the NHS. The NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) package is available for those with a complex, severe, or intense condition. Unlike the local authority, the NHS does not means-test the NHS CHC package; instead, eligibility is based on your loved one’s current care needs. If you qualify for a direct payment or personal budget, you can use it to fund your chosen care provider.

The NHS can help, too, for those moments when your loved one requires urgent care because their condition has suddenly deteriorated. Even when it isn’t due to a carer emergency, the NHS has a Fast Track Pathway that bypasses the standard assessment process and provides care within 48 hours.

If your loved one has an existing CHC package, reach out to your CHC Nurse Case Manager to arrange immediate respite care. If an issue arises at night or over a weekend, call the NHS 111 service and explain that a CHC patient has a care crisis so that you can receive support from an on-call CHC manager or a district nursing team.

Private Emergency Respite Care Options

If your loved one doesn’t qualify for local authority or NHS CHC funding, or you’re eager to provide immediate support for a loved one, private emergency respite care options are available.

Immediate last minute respite care solutions include:

  • Visiting care

  • Sitting services

  • Day centres

  • Residential care home

  • Live-in respite care

Private emergency respite care offers greater speed, quality, and choice, as you can organise rapid care for your loved one to protect their health and wellbeing during a carer’s absence.

As council-funded care requires a needs and financial assessment, arranging respite care for a loved one could potentially take many weeks or months. However, a private care provider aims to provide quality care within 24 to 48 hours.

Many private care options, especially live-in services, focus on matching a carer to a family member’s specific needs, personality, and lifestyle. Private funding also provides full control of your loved one’s care, as you can choose between high-quality residential homes, day centres, or live-in care or nursing services.

What to Prepare in Advance

The more information you have to hand, the quicker it will be to arrange urgent respite care in the UK for someone you love.

Make the respite care planning process easier with the following documents:

  • A medical summary for your loved one – include details about their medical history, allergies, past hospitalisations, and care needs.

  • An updated medication list – this should include the dosages, timings, and consumption preferences.

  • Legal documents – provide copies of a loved one’s Lasting Power of Attorney, advance decision (living will), and DNACPR orders.

  • Your loved one’s NHS number

  • A contact list – provide telephone numbers for your loved one’s GP, local pharmacy, and two emergency contacts.

Also, create a care plan to make the transition as smooth as possible for your loved one.

For instance, provide a document with the following information about your loved one:

  • Their daily routine – such as their sleep/wake schedule, mealtimes, and daily activities.

  • Likes and dislikes – this may include their favourite foods, soothing activities, or topics or dishes to avoid.

  • Communication details – discuss any communication issues and tips

  • Personality and interests – provide topics that could help a carer build instant rapport with your loved one, such as music, travel, or a past occupation.
