Meet Dene Hecker — A Journey of Caring, Resilience and New Beginnings

When you meet Dene Hecker, you’re struck by her calm presence and quiet strength — qualities shaped by both motherhood and her decade of caring.

Dene Hecker

Life changed when her youngest son, Conor, was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome at just six years old. “Looking back now, there was so much to learn and a lot to deal with,” Dene recalls. Determined to give her children opportunities she hadn’t had, she worked tirelessly so they could go to university. That hard work paid off — Conor is now a high school English teacher with three degrees to his name, something Dene is deeply proud of.

Ten Years of Care — and Lifelong Friendships

Dene began caring about ten years ago, initially supporting people with spinal injuries. One of her first clients, David, became part of her life for seven years — including nearly three continuous years during COVID-19, when travel restrictions kept her in the UK.

She’s met “the most amazing people” along the way — clients and families who became true friends. Her simple rule is:

“If that was my mum or dad, how would I want someone to look after them? That’s how I work, especially on the tough days.”

Dene doesn’t just see the client in front of her; she takes time to understand their life story, achievements and character. “Don’t judge people just as they are now — look at who they were, what they have achieved and what they’ve lived through.”

Exploring the UK Through Care

Live-in care has shown Dene a side of Britain most visitors never see. She loves walking, exploring hidden countryside paths and discovering historic towns. Coming from South Africa, she’s fascinated by the UK’s deep traditions.

She remembers caring for a lady devoted to the late Queen and being with her when she passed away and watching the TV coverage together. “It’s lovely to embrace what matters to clients — those conversations mean a lot.”

The Little Things That Make a Big Difference

Dene’s love for baking often brings joy to the people she supports. Birthday cakes, biscuits, scones, Christmas cakes and homemade bread — small treats that brighten a client’s day. “Little things can make such a difference,” she smiles.

She also adores animals, having rescued two cats of her own, and especially enjoys caring for clients with pets. “It’s lovely to share that companionship,” she says.

Returning to Consultus — and Finding Security

After several years of independent work, Dene returned to Consultus just over a year ago and now enjoys working with the Managed Care service. She loves the security of having tax, leave pay and pension sorted, and values the flexibility to return to South Africa two or three times a year — including this Christmas.

She’s also a big fan of the Carer House: “It’s safe, affordable and full of people in the same boat. The carer house makes Consultus unique, it's worth so much to me.”

Patience, Perspective and Heart

If there’s one quality Dene credits for her success as a carer, it’s patience — something shaped by her family upbringing and life experiences. Growing up in a warm, extended family home in South Africa gave her a strong sense of empathy and connection.

And perhaps that’s why her approach to care feels so deeply human. For Dene, it’s never just a job. It’s about respecting someone’s life story, finding joy in the little things, and offering the kind of care she’d want for her own loved ones.
