What is live in care and how does it work in Wales?

Live-in care in Wales means a trained, professional carer lives alongside you (or the person receiving care) in your own home, providing round-the-clock care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The carer offers personalised support in a variety of ways, such as attending to personal care, helping with medication management, general companionship, and overnight support. Someone is always there to assist, so it suits people with dementia or other long-term health conditions.

Home care in Wales greatly differs from living in a care home as the person gets to stay in familiar surroundings, sticking close to the things they love the most, whether that's the home they adore or pets they don't want to say goodbye to. With around 21.1% of people in Wales identifying as disabled, having access to such high-quality care without having to upend your entire life makes so much sense.

  • CQC OVERALL RATING: GOOD

Independently inspected and regulated by the Care Quality Commission

Our managed live-in care service is assessed across five key inspection domains - all rated Good

What does CQC regulation mean for your family?

Our fully managed live-in care service is regulated and inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), England's independent regulator of health and adult social care. This means our managed carers are supervised and accountable to a regulated framework - and our service is rated Good across all five CQC inspection domains.

Our introductory live-in care service introduces you directly to a self-employed carer. This service is not CQC regulated, as the carer works for you independently. We will always guide you to the service that genuinely meets your needs.

Live-in care and home care services across Wales

Our home care in Wales provides a broad range of live-in care and home care services across the Wales region. A big part of the service involves general day-to-day support for older people and adults with disabilities. So, a carer may help with dressing, grooming, and general household tasks each day.

For more specialised support, there is also dementia care at home. We have specialist home carers in Wales who can offer high-quality dementia support in familiar surroundings, which significantly reduces confusion and anxiety, which we understand is a huge deal for both people who have dementia and their loved ones.

There's also live-in nursing care for people in Wales with more complex needs. They will receive all the support they need to live a more fulfilling and comfortable life. If you live with a partner who also needs care, there's also support for couples.

For more short-term care, you can seek out our respite live-in care. This is for family carers who need a much-deserved break. This can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. We also offer palliative and end-of-life care, providing compassionate support as your family navigates a terminal illness diagnosis for a loved one.

Rest assured, for all our services, all carers are trained at our nationally recognised Skills for Care Centre of Excellence, covering everything from personal care to complex, condition-led nursing support.

Why choose live in care in Wales over a care home

Choosing live in care in Wales rather than residential care makes a great difference to families. With live in care, you can stay in your own home on your own terms, enjoying the same routines surrounded by familiar sights, and have more freedom over when family members can visit. This is particularly important for people living with dementia, as a change of environment can cause distress.

A home carer also provides one-on-one attention throughout the entire day (and night), which differs from residential care, where carers have to manage multiple patients at once. One thing that might prevent people from looking into home care options is the cost, but the reality is that it's actually comparable to a good-quality residential care home and can even be more cost-effective for couples.

Not sure whether live-in care is right for your loved one? Call our team on 01732 496715 — we can talk through the options and help you make the right decision for your family, with no obligation.
