What an adventure it's been!10/07/19
Sheila Trudgian has been a carer with Consultus since 2008. Here, she explains what drew her to a career in live-in care and why she’s still enjoying it over 10 years later.
I started working in care around 10 years ago, when my mother’s deteriorating health led me to find a job in the UK, where she lived. Although my husband and I are both from the UK, we emigrated to Cape Town, South Africa in 1976 and the warmer climate and outdoor lifestyle were too wonderful to leave. I was looking for a career that would allow me to work in the UK when and as often or as little as I wanted to. Live-in care was the ideal solution; it’s rewarding work and the flexible nature of the job as a self-employed carer where I’m in control of when and where I work would allow me to spend time with my mother and UK family and friends in between bookings.
The Consultus training programme was brilliant, and it gave me the confidence I needed to be a great carer. My first client was in Royal Tunbridge Wells, and although keen at first, naturally the nerves kicked in when I arrived. However, with a friendly smile and encouragement from the current carer, my fears quickly faded. I knew there was a friendly voice at the end of the telephone from Consultus, so after a deep breath, I quickly settled in and put all my training into practice.
I currently care for a lovely lady, who turned 99 years young in June – she’s amazing! I return to her regularly, so we have got to know each other really well. When we’re blessed with the warm sunshine we always go out for a walk, and with a love of photography, I often take pictures when we’re out and about. We’ve spent many happy hours together, whether that’s playing cards, scrabble or completing a puzzle or two.
The support from all of the Consultus staff has been fantastic, from my first interview with a Care Consultant (Rosemary Henry) to all the subsequent Care Consultants including Nicola St-Aubyn. I have also met some wonderful carers on my journey, and I’m lucky enough to call many of them my friends.
Ten years on from my very first client, it’s been a real adventure! I’ve met so many different and interesting people, who are all so loved by their supportive families. Looking back over my time, I am amazed at all the places I’ve travelled to, including the Scottish Highlands, Wales, the Scilly Isles and the Isle of Wight, just to name a few!
Becoming a self-employed live-in carer for Consultus has given me so many life skills that I am thankful for, and I’m excited for this wonderful adventure to continue. I’m also now aware that I could choose to become an employed carer with Consultus as part of their new managed care service where Consultus takes the overall responsibility for the delivery of care after carrying out a full onsite care assessment, not simply the introduction of self employed carers where we as self-employed carers take the responsibility for the delivery of the care itself.
