Inge Coetzer - Recommend a Friend20/02/19
Consultus carer Inge Coetzer, the winner of our June 2018 Recommend a Friend prize draw. Here, she shares how she spent her prize.
Inge started working as a Consultus live-in carer in 2008 and has since completed 146 bookings. Recently retired, Inge has now returned home to South Africa, where she enjoyed an exciting and unforgettable trip, courtesy of our Recommend a Friend scheme.
I was very pleasantly surprised to receive the news that I’d been the lucky recipient of the grand prize draw for referring a friend to work for Consultus.
Of the many wonderful options to choose from, I opted to do something out of the ordinary and off the beaten track.
The west coast of South Africa is not as well frequented as the south and east, known as ‘The Garden Route’, yet it has a lot to offer in terms of diverse and different plants, animals and sea life. I chose to visit a small seaside village where a guest house offers a weekend getaway with a difference, in a wigwam or tepee.
After weeks of anticipation we were finally off to the Farr Out Guesthouse in Paternoster, which is about 90 minutes’ drive from Cape Town. We took the opportunity to do a stop along the way to visit the West Coast Fossil Park, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the area during prehistoric times.
As we travelled along the driveway towards the guest house, we were greeted by a pair of spotted eagle-owls mere yards from the car, perched on the frame of a crayfish trap. Although untamed, we could get within a couple of feet to take photos and videos; this brought about some beak snapping and hissing but otherwise they were unmoved.
We were greeted heartily by our hosts for the weekend and shown to our wigwam. Everything you could require was provided - large circular bed, fridge, shower, fan and décor to suit the Native American theme. As the sun rose in the early morning the natural vegetation was alive with small bird activity. An inquisitive dune rat and little striped field mouse also came out to greet us.
At dinner time we relaxed at one of the restaurants in this once fishing village, which naturally serve excellent seafood as well as the famous West Coast Lobster (crayfish).
In the evening we made use of the lodge’s outdoor wood-fire heated hot tub. The water initially felt unbearably hot but once fully immersed and watching the starry night sky, it was the most deliciously relaxing experience.
We also took the chance to explore a neighbouring village and scouted rustic coastal campsites for future use.
After the second morning’s delicious and generous breakfast we were taken by our host, Deon, on a dune buggy trip to explore the coastal dunes while he shared his vast knowledge of the history, the plant life, the birds, snakes and people of the area.
We are most grateful to have had this wonderful experience which will not soon be forgotten.
Heartfelt thanks to Consultus!
What is Recommend a Friend?
The Carer Recruitment Department introduced our Recommend a Friend scheme in 2018, to thank our carers for recommending their friends to work for us. There are four prize-draws a year and each winner receives a £500 voucher to spend on experience website, Red Letter Days.
If you are a Consultus carer and would like to win a £500 Red Letter Days voucher, all you need to do is contact our Recruitment team and recommend a suitable friend to work for us.
