Deda Allum: Becoming a Consultus Carer is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!14/09/18
I started my caring journey in 2013. I had been living in Spain for many years and was enjoying all the benefits of living life on the Mediterranean Coast – I was living the dream. Unfortunately, during the recession, I was finding it more difficult to find regular work and the wonderful lady I was helping moved back to the UK.
I decided to view it as an opportunity to pursue a career I’d been interested in for some time: caring. I saw an advertisement for Consultus who were looking for live-in carers, I contacted their Spanish agent and I haven’t looked back since!
My initial interview was in Spain with Consultus Overseas Agent, Sandra Field, followed by a second at Consultus’ Head Office in Tonbridge, England. I was really impressed by the professionalism of the Consultus staff who were only too happy to answer my questions and explain in detail what was expected of me. Sandra has lived in Spain for many years and fully understands what is needed to live in Spain and work in the UK. Once I arrived in the UK I was met by the recruitment team who ensured I had everything I needed to start my new career. They were warm and friendly and I instantly felt at ease. The idea of being self-employed was very appealing and I really liked the flexibility that being a live-in carer through Consultus offered. I began to get excited about my new career and I knew I had chosen the right agency.
I also appreciated that Consultus offers such an extensive range of training options. In addition to completing the compulsory carer induction training, I have also completed a Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care as well as a number of distance learning courses with them. The training is first-rate and the courses are flexible to suit the demands of a busy caring career. It’s so important to continue to develop your skills so that you can be the best carer possible to your clients, and the Consultus Training Centre makes that easy to do.
Six years on, I’m so glad to have made the change to caring. I meet so many interesting and inspirational people and the work is so gratifying. It’s a privilege to be welcomed into a person’s home and to be trusted to do a much-needed and rewarding job. It’s a wonderful feeling to see the positive difference you are making in someone’s life.
On top of the fact that you’re earning money, a career as a live-in carer offers a great work-life balance. When I’m not working, my life is a social one cycling and walking in the beautiful mountains and baby sitting or should I say dog sitting friends’ dogs. When I am working I’ve also had the opportunity to see parts of the UK I may never have seen otherwise. To an outsider, it may seem a strange and an unsettled lifestyle to live in Spain and work in England, but caring for the elderly is so interesting and rewarding that it overrides any doubtful thoughts. Besides, in this day and age technology makes it easy to stay in touch with loved ones.
Becoming a Consultus carer is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am now living the life I’ve always wanted; I am my own boss, I set my own work schedule, I meet truly inspirational people and I divide my time between Spain and England – what could be better?
88 bookings on, I am so glad I saw the Consultus’ advert and made the call; it really did change my life for the better.
I highly recommend Consultus to anyone interested in working as a live-in carer. Their Spanish agent, Sandra Field, has years of experience helping those living in Spain who want a new challenge and she makes the transition as easy as possible.
