Consultus Carer Induction Training: Not your usual training experience

Amy Hosking joined the Consultus Marketing team in June 2018. Here, she recalls her experience undergoing the Four Day Carer Induction programme as part of her introduction to the company.

When Consultus Marketing Manager, Stephanie Coyne, told me that I would be joining in with the carer Induction Training programme in my first week, I was a bit hesitant.

Whilst I agreed with Stephanie that it would be a great way to learn more about what our carers do, let’s be honest – training is usually arduous and something to be endured. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I couldn’t have been more wrong! Not only was the course informative, it was also really interesting, even for a non-carer such as myself.

Having worked in the health industry for some time, I’m familiar with the basics of moving and positioning, but the carer Induction Training course is, naturally, much more comprehensive.

The course covers all aspects of caring, including moving and positioning (manual handling), dementia, first-aid, nutrition and personal care.

Everyone in the group had to demonstrate how to carry out basic life support correctly, as well as various moving and positioning manoeuvres, such as using a slide sheet.

“It was great to be part of such a positive, friendly group of carers, and really encouraging to know that their future clients will be in such good hands.”

We also had training in how to hoist someone correctly. The trainers were all very attentive and helped us individually to ensure we mastered the correct technique.

I was very impressed by the standard of Consultus’ trainers. Julie, Laura, Carole and Susan were outstanding, their knowledge and experience evident. They all had a slightly different delivery style, but all were equally informative and engaging. The training struck a good mix between teaching the material and making it enjoyable.

It really shows how much easier it is to learn something new and unfamiliar when you have a great teacher. I look forward to working with the other members of the Consultus’ Training team: Lisa, Erica and Helen.

The highlight of the training for me was meeting the new carers who were doing the course with me. It was fascinating to hear about their lives before Consultus and it was also reassuring to see the standard of carers Consultus attracts.

Each carer I spoke to brought different and valuable skills to their profession; one used to be a nurse, another a caterer and one was a teacher. Two of them had been caring for many years and were just refreshing their skills.

They all had one thing in common though; a genuine wish to be the best carers they can be for their clients. It was great to be part of such a positive, friendly group of carers, and really encouraging to know that their future clients will be in such good hands.

I am thrilled to join Consultus and look forward to working with more of our carers and nurses to promote the incredible work they do.
