Live in Care News
On Wednesday 6 October, Care Consultant Sue Anderson visited the London Care Show, held this year at Olympia.
As well as being a forum for suppliers to network and demonstrate new innovations for care, with changes in legislation and improvements in the way we care, this show also educated on vital strategic issues that impact directly on the care home sector.
There were some detailed topical seminars covering the Government Green Paper and the Care Quality Commission, however Sue Anderson also took the opportunity to spend some time listening to a seminar by Damian Murphy from the Alzheimer’s Society on understanding the complexities of Dementia.
“Damian Murphy’s presentation was excellent and gave a real opportunity to understand new innovations surrounding dementia care”, explains Sue. “He talked at length about the ‘patient passport’, which dementia sufferers can carry with them to explain their personal history and preferences to new contacts. Mr Murphy cited an example of a dementia patient being taken to hospital, frightened and confused by different surroundings and frustrated by nursing staff who do not understand them. A ‘passport’ explaining their likes and dislikes, their condition and history could prove invaluable. This is an area of dementia care we cover in the Consultus Dementia Training Course, so it was good to hear the Alzheimer’s Society’s views on this”.
As Sue further explains: “There are currently more than 750,000 people in the UK living with a form of dementia and this figure is growing. As many of our Clients suffer from one of the various types of dementia, it is vital that we and our Carers have an understanding of the condition and information on how to cope with the challenging behaviour which is associated with the illness. The Care Show was extremely informative in this respect”.
The Care Show is also at Birmingham on 10/11 November, Bournemouth 29/30 March 2011 and back in London 11/12 October 2011.
